Common Questions
How does sound identification work?
Record an animal sound with your microphone, or upload an audio file, and the app analyzes it to suggest the most likely species within seconds. An internet connection is required for identification.
How does photo identification work?
Take a photo or choose one from your photo library, and the app analyzes it to suggest the species shown.
Do I need an internet connection?
Photo and sound identification need an internet connection to analyze your capture. Bird and wildlife sound recordings you have already opened remain available for offline listening.
How many species and sounds are included?
The app includes recordings for hundreds of bird species and other wildlife, continually expanded over time.
What is "Nearby Birds"?
Nearby Birds uses your device's location, with your permission, to show birds and recordings associated with your area on a map. You can deny or revoke location access at any time in your device settings; the rest of the app works normally without it.
What is the listening quiz?
It's a short game that plays a bird call and asks you to identify it, so you can train your ear and track your best streak.
How do I get better identification results?
Record in a quiet environment, get as close to the animal as safely possible, and avoid wind noise or overlapping sounds. For photos, use good lighting and keep the animal clearly in frame.
